My AK isn't the top of the line.  It's a Romanian WASR-10 but it's what I could afford. 

I changed the trigger group and equipped it with a adjustable  stock and a sling.  On top I put an Ultimak rail that allows my eBay-acquired Comp M2 red dot sight to sit right where I can see it best.  With this setup I can't quite co-witness with the iron sights, but the red dot can be easily removed from the rail.  It's a compromise and the sight isn't as snazzy as the new miniaturize red dots, but it works. 

Now if I can just find a good range around here close that permits this kind of weapon!

Congrats on the new shooter.

There are plenty of ranges that will allow you to shoot your AK.  I'm not familiar with the public ranges, but the following clubs allow AKs for sure:

Crawfordsville Gun Club
Riley Conservation Club
Wildcat Valley Rifle & Pistol Club
Hamilton Co.
Atlanta Conservation Club
